In a fuel cell hydrogen and oxygen react to produce electricity. In the process hydrogen gas is oxidised at the anode and oxygen at the cathode. If 67.2 L of H 2 at STP react in 15 minutes, what is the average current produced ? If the entire current is used for electrodeposition of copper from copper (II) solution, how many grams of copper will be deposited ?
Anode reaction :H 2 + 2OH – ⎯→ 2H 2 O + 2e – Cathode reaction :O 2 + 2H 2 + 2e
– ⎯→ 4OH –

Sol. Moles of H2 reacting =
= 3
∴ Equivalent of H 2 used = 3 × 2 = 6
Now,
=
∴ 6 =
∴ i = 643.33 ampere
Also, equivalent of H 2 = equivalent of Cu formed
∴ Equivalent of Cu deposited = 6
∴ wCu = 6 ×
= 190.5 g
Thus, wt. of Cu deposited = 190.5 g
