The standard reduction potential of the Ag + /Ag electrode at 298 K is 0.799 V. Given that for AgI, K sp = 8.7 × 10 –17 , evaluate the potential of the Ag + /Ag electrode in a saturated solution of AgI. Also calculate the standard reduction potential of the I – /AgI/Ag electrode.

Sol. K sp of AgI = [Ag + ][I – ] = 8.7 × 10 –17

In a saturated solution of AgI

[Ag + ] = [I–]

So, [Ag + ] = =

= 9.33 × 10 –9 M

By Nernst equation of Ag + + e ⎯→ Ag(s)

E = Eº –

= 0.799 –

= 0.325 V

For standard I – /AgI/Ag electrode, [I – ] = 1.0 M

K sp of AgI = [Ag + ][I – ]

8.7 × 10 –17 = [Ag + [1.0]

∴ [Ag + ] = = 8.7 × 10–17

∴ Electode potential,

E = Eº –

= 0.799 –

= –0.149 V
