: Benzenesulphonyl chlotide , which is also known as Hinsberg reagent is used to distinguish primary, secondary and tertiary amines.

The reaction of benzenesulphonyl chloride with primary amine yields -alkylbenzene sulphonamide which is soluble in alkali. With secondary amine, it hields -dialkylbenzene sulphonamide which is insoluble in alkali. Tertiary amines do not react with benzenesulphony chloride.

(Soluble in alkali due to presence of acidic hydrogen atom attached to nitrogen atom.)

(Insoluble in alkali due to absence of any hydrogen atomic attached to nitrogen atom.)
