BaCl 2 gives a white precipitate. with both sulphite and sulphate ions.

BaSO 3 is soluble in conc.HCl whereas BaSO 4 is insoluble in conc.HCl.

SO 3 2– + MnO 4 – + H + ⎯→ Mn 2+ (colourless)

SO 4 2– + MnO 4 – + H + ⎯→ (No colour change)
