Give below are two statements :
Statement I : The higher oxidation states are more stable down the group among transition elements unlike
-block elements.
Statement II : Copper cannot liberate hydrogen from weak acids.
choose the correct answer from the options given below :

In transition elements on moving down the group the stability of higher oxidation state
increases. This is due to similarity of energy of the
-orbitals with the outer
-orbitals.
While in case of
-block elements stability of lower oxidation state increases down the group due to inert pair effect. Hence statement-I is correct.
Statement II is also true as Cu lies below hydrogen in electrochemical series hence, it cannot liberate hydrogen with acids.
