Arrange the following compounds according to decreasing boiling points.

(I) (II) (III) (IV)
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsA
The given compounds are phenol and its derivatives (also known as isomeric dihydroxy
benzenes).
As the distance between the -OH group increases, the repulsion between them decreases. In case of quinol intermolecular H -bonding takes place while in case of catechol intra molecular H-bonding takes place. Intermolecular H -bonding are more stronger. So, Boiling point of quinol is higher than catechol.
Therefore, decreasing order of boiling point is;

The name of the given compounds with their boiling point is -
I - Phenol (
)
II - Catechol
III - Resorcinol (
).
IV - Quinol (
)
