Gametes are non-motile in red algae. Red algae typically have non-motile gametes that rely on water currents for fertilization because they lack flagella or other structures for active movement. Green algae and some other types of algae may have motile gametes with flagella. Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, do not have gametes because they reproduce through a different process called binary fission. Chlorophyceae (green algae) reproduce by zoospores with two identical anterior flagella.
