The area of a triangle formed by a line with co-coordinate axes is 54 square units and the perpendicular drawn from the origin to the line makes an angle of 60º with the x-axis, find the equation of line.

Sol. Let the equation of the line

x cos α + y sin α = p given α = 60º

∴ x cos 60º + y sin 60º = p

⇒ x + = 2p …(1)

intercept on x – axis ⇒ x = 2p ( y = 0) , intercept on y – axis ⇒ y = 2p/ ( x = 0)

Given Area of Δ OAB = 54

⇒ 1/2 (2p) (2p/ ) =

54 ⇒ p = ± 9

∴ Equation of line x + = ± 18
