Differentiating y 2 = 6x, we have

Differentiating 9x 2 + by 2 = 16, we have

For curves to intersect at right angles, we must have at the points of intersection
= –1 ⇒ 27x = by 2 . Thus we must have
9x 2 + by 2 = 16 ⇒ 9x 2 + 27x – 16 = 0 (ii)
(i) and (ii) must be identical so 27 = 6b ⇒ b = 9/2.
