A circle (x – α ) 2 + (y – β ) 2 = 8 is inscribed in a parabola
y 2 = 4x. Find [ α + β ] where [x] represents greatest integer ≤ x.

Sol.
By symmetry, circle must be centred on x axis.
so β = 0

Now, normal to y 2 = 4x at p(m 2 , –2m) is
y = mx – 2m – m 3 ( α , 0) must lie on it ⇒ m( α – 2) – m
2 = 0
m 2 = α –2
Now, (m 2 – α ) 2 + 4m 2 = 8
so ( α – 2 – α ) 2 + 4( α – 2) = 8
⇒ α = 3
So α + β = 3 + 0
