The equation of a hyperbola with co-ordinate axes as principal axes, if the distances of one of its vertices from the foci are 3 & 1 can be :

A
3x 2 − y 2 = 3
B
x 2 − 3y 2 + 3 = 0
C
x 2 − 3y 2 − 3 = 0

The correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.

(a,b)Let one of the vertices be (a, 0)

Focii are (ae, 0) & (– ae, 0)

given that ae – a = 1 & ae + a = 3

⇒ 2ae = 4 ⇒ ae = 2

∴ a = 1 ⇒ e = 2

∴ using e 2 = 1 + ⇒ b 2 = 3

∴ Required hyperbola is

= 1 ⇒ 3x 2 – y 2 = 3

Again, one more possibility is

e 2 = 1 + ⇒ b 2 =

∴ Hyperbola will be x 2 – 3y 2 + 3 = 0
