Find the number of solution of the following equation x 4 – 6x 2 – 8x – 3 = 0

Sol. Let f(x) = x 4 – 6x 2 – 8x – 3

Now f'(x) = 4x 3 – 12x –8 = 0 ⇒ x = – 1, – 1, 2

f(–1) = 0, f(2) = – 27
