Show that the foot of the perpendicular from the origin to the join of A(–9, 4, 5) and B (11, 0, –1) is the mid point of AB. Also find distance of point (2, 4, 4) from the line AB.

Sol. 
P (mid-point of AB) is (1, 2, 2)
dr’s of OP are : 1, 2, 2 and dr’s of AB are : 20, – 4, – 6
1 × 20 + 2 × (– 4) + 2 × (– 6) = 20 – 12 – 8 = 0
∴ OP ⊥ AB
as the midpoint of (0, 0, 0) and (2, 4, 4) is (1, 2, 2) so the distance =
