If x, y are rational numbers such that (x + y) + (x – 2y) = 2x – y + (x – y – 1) then –

x = 1, y = 1

x = 2, y = 1

x = 5, y = 1

x & y can take infinitely many values

The correct answer is:

x + y = 2x – y … (i)

x –2y = 0 …….(ii)

x – y –1 = 0 … (iii)

x = 2y 2y – y – 1 = 0

Put in eq. (iii) y = 1

x = 2
