Red blood cells (RBCs) or erythrocytes are one among the blood cells that are found suspended in blood plasma. The haem group of haemoglobin, gives RBCs their red colour. Haemoglobin has the role in transportation of oxygen from lungs to various other tissues. Like all other blood cells, RBCs originate from red bone marrow. They have a lifespan of 120 days and after which they are degraded in the spleen. Spleen is also known as 'graveyard of RBCs'.
