The plant diseases caused by the genus Ustilago are called smuts because of the characteristic appearance of their spores. The fungi produce a large quantity of dark-colored, powdery teliospores (also known as chlamydospores) that accumulate on the host plant parts. These black dusty masses resemble soot or dirt, which is reflected in the name "smut" (derived from Germanic words for dirt or soot).
