Aristotle is credited with the earliest recorded attempt at a scientific classification of living organisms. He used simple morphological characters to classify plants into three broad categories: herbs, shrubs, and trees. While his student Theophrastus (known as the "Father of Botany") later provided a much more detailed classification system in his work Historia Plantarum, Aristotle's framework was the pioneer in providing a scientific basis for biological classification.
