Morphine is the principle opium alkaloid. It is a strong analgesic. Opium is dried latex of unripe capsular fruits of poppy plant, Papaver somniferum. It is eaten or smoked. Morphine depresses respiratory centre, contributes to the fall in BP and cause bradycardia. It causes addiction.
