Many algae such as Volvox, Spirogyra and some species of Chlamydomonas have haplontic life cycle. In this, the dominant, photosynthetic phase represents free-living gametophyte.
All bryophytes, e.g., Funaria, represent haplo-diplontic life cycle. A dominant, independent, photosynthetic, thalloid or erect phase is represented by a haploid gametophyte and it alternates with the shortlived multicellular sporophyte totally or partially dependent on the gametophyte for its anchorage and nutrition. All pteridophytes, e.g., fern, represent haplo-diplontic life cycle. The diploid sporophyte is represented by a dominant, independent, photosynthetic, vascular plant body. It alternates with multicellular, saprophytic/autotrophic, independent but short-lived haploid gametophyte. Gymnosperms and angiosperms have dominant diploid sporophyte vascular plant, with highly reduced male or female gametophyte. E.g., Cycas
