Dedifferentiation is the process where the living differentiated cells, that have lost the capacity to divide can regain the capacity of division under certain conditions. Tracheary elements are mature cells that are part of the xylem, involved in water transport. These cells do not undergo dedifferentiation as they are highly specialized, lignified, and functionally dead, which prevents them from reverting to a less specialized state.

Cork cells are the mature cells produced by the cork cambium and are primarily involved in providing protective barriers for the plant. These cells do not undergo dedifferentiation; once they are formed, they remain in their specialized state. Formation of secondary xylem and phloem elements(e) results from the differentiation of cells from the vascular cambium. These are the products of redifferentiation.
