Deuteromycetes, commonly known as "imperfect fungi," are characterized by the absence of a known sexual reproduction stage. While some members are saprophytes or parasites, a large number of them are specifically litter decomposers. They play a vital role in ecosystems by breaking down dead organic matter (leaf litter and plant debris) and facilitating mineral cycling by returning nutrients to the soil. Common examples include Alternaria, Colletotrichum, and Trichoderma.
