Archaebacteria are considered the most primitive monerans because they are among the oldest living organisms on Earth, believed to have originated approximately 3.5 to 4 billion years ago. They are often referred to as "living fossils" because they thrive in extreme environments—such as high temperatures (thermophiles), high salinity (halophiles), and anaerobic marshy areas (methanogens)—which mimic the harsh conditions of early Earth. Their unique cell wall and cell membrane biochemistry, which lacks peptidoglycan and contains branched-chain lipids, further distinguishes them as primitive compared to other bacteria.
