Autogamy is a type of self-pollination in which pollination is achieved within the same flower. In cleistogamous flowers, anther and stigma lie close to each other. In such flowers, when anthers dehisce with in the flowers buds, pollen grains come in contact with stigma to effect pollination. Thus, cleistogamous flowers are invariably autogamous.
A disadvantage of cleistogamy is absence of cross pollination due to which new varieties will not be formed.
