Photorespiration does not occur in plants because they have a mechanism that increases the concentration of at the enzyme site. In the pathway, carbon fixation ultimately results in the production of malic acid in the mesophyll cells.
Rubisco is an enzyme that acts as both carboxylase and oxygenase. Rubisco catalyzes the initial carbon fixing step of the Calvin cycle, which is also present in plants. Rubisco in plants does show reduced oxygenation affinity because of the unique leaf anatomy that concentrates carbon dioxide around it in bundle sheath cells.
