A chromosome has two chromatids which are the copy of a newly replicated chromosome and are joined together by a single centromere. The linkage is the tendency of closely placed genes on a chromosome to stay together during inheritance. The strength of the linkage is determined by the distance between the two genes. Greater the distance lower will be the linkage strength. The linkage is broken down due to the phenomenon of crossing over which occurs during meiosis.
