Carl Linnaeus is called the father of modern taxonomy.
He introduced binomial nomenclature (scientific naming of plants) in his book Species Plantarum, published in 1753. Each plant was given a two-part name: genus name + species epithet. Genera Plantarum and Systema Naturae were also important works, but Species Plantarum specifically started the formal plant naming system.
