The theory behind lactational amenorrhea (absence of menstruation) is that the cycle does not start during the period of strong lactation that occurs after delivery. Therefore, chances of conception are non-existent as long as the mother breastfeeds the infant. However, it has been claimed that this procedure is only successful for a maximum of six months after parturition. This have nearly zero adverse effects because no drugs or equipment are used.
