(a) Meiotic division is a reductional division. It occurs in reproductive cells and maintains the fixed number of chromosomes in sexually reproducing organisms.
Prophase-I of meiotic division is a long phase, which is divided into five sub-phases, i.e., leptotene, zygotene, pachytene, diplotene and diakinesis. In zygotene phase, homologous chromosomes pair up, this process is called synapsis. Each pair is called a bivalent.
