Published on: August 13, 2026

Perovskite, a mineral containing calcium, oxygen & titanium crystallizes in the cubic unit cell. Calcium ion occupying the corners of unit cell, oxide ion occupying the face centres & titanium ions occupying centres of unit cell. Titanium ion is described as occupying the holes in C a-O lattice.

(i) Type of holes & fraction of these holes occupied by these ions –

A
100% octahedral holes Zero 146.4 pm.
B
25% tetrahedral holes + 2 29.4 pm.
C
25% octahedral holes + 3 45 pm.
D
25% cubical holes (ii) Oxidation state of titanium in mineral is – + 4 (iii) If positions of calcium ion in perovskite are also occupied by O-atoms & edge length of unit cell becomes 200 pm. Then radius of largest atom that can be fit into the interstices without destorting the lattice 93 Pm.
