The formula M 0.98 O 1.00 shows that out of 100 Metal ions, two are missing. These two metal ions (M 2+ ) would have carried a charge of +4 units. Now this charge is balanced by the presence of M 3+ ions so four M 3+ ions should be there out of total 98 ion.
∴ M 2+ ions = 98 – 4 = 94
∴ %M 3+ ions =
× 100 = 4.08%
and %M 2+ ions =
× 100 = 95.9%
