Why sulphide ores are first roasted before going to smelting ?

Sol. Carbon is usually used for the reduction of ores and if sulphide ores are used, it will form CS 2 which is difficult to get rid off. Therefore, sulphide ores are first roasted to get metal oxides which are then reduced by carbon to give metal and CO 2 escapes easily into the air.
