In phosgene gas reaction, at 400ºC, the initial partial pressures are = 342 torr; and = 352 torr At 400ºC and at equilibrium total pressure become 440 torr. Now enough N 2 (g) is introduced at equilibrium so that partial pressure of N 2 (g) at new equilibrium become 0.4 atm at 400ºC. Determine percentange increase in the dissociation of COCl 2 (g) at 400ºC due to introduction of N 2 (g) in nearest possible intergers. After introduction of N 2 (g) the total pressure was 1 atm at equilibrium.

At equilibrium: (342 – x) (352 – x)

∴ 342 + 352 – x = 440 = P total

∴ x = 254 torr

= = 0.334 atm

= = 0.116 atm

and = = 0.128 atm

∴ COCl 2 (g) CO (g) + Cl 2 (g)
