The cell potential for the unbalanced chemical reaction :

Hg 2 2+ + NO 3 – + H 3 O + ⎯→ Hg 2+ +HNO 2 + H 2 O

is measured under standard state conditions in the electrochemical cell shown in the accompanying diagram. the cell voltage is positive : EºCell = 0.02 V

Given

NO 3 – + 3H 3 O + 2e – ⎯→ HNO 2 + 4H 2 O

Eº = 0.94 V
