The reaction Cl 2 (g) + ⎯→ + Cl – is to be carried out in basic medium. Starting with 0.15 mole of Cl 2 , 0.010 moles of and 0.30 moles of OH – , how many milli moles of OH – will be left in solution after the reaction is complete ?

Sol. Cl 2 (g) + ⎯→ + Cl – x =2 x = 8

∴ in the balanced reaction the mole ratio of Cl 2 and is 4 : 1

By balancing the residual charges by OH

– we get

4Cl 2 + + 10 OH – ⎯→ 2 + 8Cl – + 5H 2 O

L.R is and moles of OH – left

= 0.30 – 0.01 × 10

= 0.2 moles

= 200 milli moles.
