The reaction Cl 2 (g) +
⎯→
+ Cl – is to be carried out in basic medium. Starting with 0.15 mole of Cl 2 , 0.010 moles of
and 0.30 moles of OH – , how many milli moles of OH – will be left in solution after the reaction is complete ?
Assume no other reaction occurs.

200
Sol. Cl 2 (g) +
⎯→
+ Cl – x =2 x = 8
∴ in the balanced reaction the mole ratio of Cl 2 and
is 4 : 1
By balancing the residual charges by OH
– we get
4Cl 2 +
+ 10 OH – ⎯→ 2
+ 8Cl – + 5H 2 O
L.R is
and moles of OH – left
= 0.30 – 0.01 × 10
= 0.2 moles
= 200 milli moles.
