Chemistry S and P - Block Elements (S - Block Elements Not In Syllabus ) Compounds of Nitrogen and Phosphorus Comprehension
Published on: August 14, 2026

Phosphorus, forms two hydrides, phosphine and

diphosphine, P 2 H 4 , being analogous to NH 3 and N 2 H 4 .

Elementary phosphorus reacts with H 2 at 300° C to

form PH 3 . The hydrolysis of metal phosphides is a

convenient route of prepration of PH 3 . White

phosphorus also reacts with hot water to produce phosphine and hypophosphorus acid. Hydrazine, N 2 H 4 , may be viewed as an oxidation product of NH 3 ,and may linked to H 2 O2 which may be viewed as an

oxidation product of H 2 O. It is obtained by oxidising

aqueous ammonia by hypochlorite under boiling in the

presence of glue or gelatin.

NH 3 + NaOCl ⎯→ NH 2 Cl + NaOH

NH 2 Cl + NH 3 ⎯→ N 2 H 4 + HCl
