Heating most alcohols with strong acid causes them to lose a molecule of water and forms alkene.
The reaction is elimination and is favoured at high temperature. The most commonly used acids in
dehydration are sulphuric acid and phosphoric acids. Lewis acids such as Al 2 O 3 are also used.
