When a small amount of strong acid is added, the basic component of the buffer reacts with it to form a unionised, weak acid. Conversely, when a strong alkali is added, the acidic component of the buffer reacts with it to form unionised water and a weak salt. Because the added ions are locked up into unionised molecules, the overall pH remains relatively stable
