In nineteenth century it was recognized that aromatic compounds differ greatly from unsaturated aliphatic compounds. In 1925 Armit & Robinson recognized that artmatic properties of benzene ring was related to presence of a closed loop of electrons. Aromaticity can be defined as ability to sustain a ring current.
