Roasting removes easily oxidisable volatile impurities like arsenic (as As 2 O 3 ) sulphur (as SO 2 ), phosphorus (as P 4 O 10 ) and antimony (as Sb 2 O 3 ).

4M (M = As, Sb) + 3O 2 — → 2M 2 O 3

S + O 2 — → SO 2 ; P 4 + 4O 2 — → P 4 O 10

Organic matter, moisture if present in the ore, also get expelled and the ore becomes porous.
