In which of the following molecules, the central atom does not have sp 3 hybridization?
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsB
For neutral molecules,
No. of electron pairs = No. of atoms bonded to it + 1/2 [Gp. no of central atom – Valency of central atom]
∴ For CH 4 , no. of e – pairs =
= 4 (sp 3 hybridisation)
For SF 4 , no. of e – pairs =
= 5 (sp 3 d hybridisation)
For ions,
No. of electron pairs = No. of atoms bonded to it + 1/2 [Gp. no. of central atom – Valency of central atom ± No. of electrons]
∴ For BF 4–, no. e – pairs =
= 4 (sp 3 hybridisation)
For NH +4 , no. of e – pairs =
= 4 (sp 3 hybridisation)
