The formation of stronger back bond (3p 2p overlap in BCls and weaker 3p 3p overlap in AlCl 3 ) reduces the electron deficiency of the central atom and thus dimerization tendency is reduced. So AlCl 3 can form a dimer but BF 3 and BCl 3 cannot.
