Why do alkali metals form unipositive ions and impart characteristic colours to flame?

After removal of I st electron alkali metal occupies inert gas configuration. Now removal of II nd electron from inert gas configuration requires very high energy, therefore, they form unipositive ions. As IE 1 of these metals are low, the excitation of electrons can be done by providing less energy. This much of energy can be given by Bunsen flame. When they drop back to the ground state, there is emission of radiation in the visible region.
