An element E crystallizes in body centred cubic structure. If the edge length of the cell is 1.469 × 10 –10 m and the density is 19.3 g cm 3 , calculate the atomic mass of this element. Also calculate the radius of an atom of this element

CHECK THE SOLUTION.
Sol. For bcc structure, z = 2
a = 1.469 × 10 –10 m = 1.469 × 10 –8 cm
d = 19.3 g cm –3 M = ?, r = ?
d =
⇒ M =
∴ M =
M =
M = 184.22 × 10
–1 = 18.42 g/mol
Also for bcc, r =
r =
× 1.469 × 10 –10 =
= 0.636 × 10
–10 = 63.6 × 10 –12 = 63.6 pm.
