One of the methods of preparation of per disulphuric acid, H 2 S 2 O 8 , involve electrolytic oxidation of H 2 SO 4 at anode (2H 2 SO 4 ⎯→ H 2 S 2 O 8 + 2H + + 2e – ) with oxygen and hydrogen as by-products. In such an electrolysis, 9.722 L of H 2 and 2.35L of O 2 were generated at STP. What is the weight of H 2 S 2 O 8 formed ?

43.456 g
Sol. Reaction at anode 2H 2 SO 4 ⎯→ H 2 S 2 O 8 + 2H + + 2e –
H 2 S 2 O 8 , O 2 are the product at anode.
2H 2 O ⎯→ O 2 + 4H + + 4e –
Reaction at cathode 2H 2 O + 2e – ⎯→ H 2 + 2OH –
Eq. of H 2 = Eq. of O 2 + Eq. of H 2 S 2 O 8
× 2 =
× 4 + x × 2
x = 0.244 mole
= 43.49 g.
