CH 3 COOH + NaOH CH 3 COONa + H 2 O

milli moles 100×0.2 100×0.2 – –

0 0 100×0.2

Then,

[CH 3 COONa] = × 1000 = 0.1

D.O.D ( α ) for CH 3 COOH = = = 10 –2

Then,

K a of CH 3 COOH = C α 2 = 0.1 × (10 –2 ) 2 = 10 –5 ⇒ pKa = 5 for CH 3 COOH.

So, pH of CH 3 COONa salt is :

pH = 7 + pKa + logC.

= 7 + × 5 + log0.1 = 9.
