2- P entanone can be distinguished from 3- P entanone by which reagent ?
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsThe correct answer is:
C
A methyl ketone is 2-pentanone. In the presence of sodium hydroxide, it undergoes a haloform reaction with iodine to produce a yellow iodoform precipitate. The methyl ketone 3-pentanone is not one. It doesn't go through the haloform reaction. Therefore, a reaction with iodine in the presence of NaOH can discriminate between 3 - pentanone and 2-pentanone.
