At 80ºC, the vapour pressure of pure benzene is 753 mm Hg and of pure toluene 290 mm Hg. Calculate the composition of a liquid in mole per cent which at 80ºC is in equilibrium with the vapour containing 30 mole per cent of benzene.

CHECK THE SOLUTION.
14.16 mole percent benzene
Given P 0 Benzene = 753 & P 0 toluene = 290
X B P 0 B = Y B P T i.e. X B (753) = 0.3 P T ..... (i)
X t P 0 t = Y t P T i.e. X t (290) = 0.7 P T ..... (ii)
Dividing (i) by (ii)
or
= 0.165
∴ X t = 0.8584 = 85.84% so X B = 14.16%.
