The standard oxidation potential for the half − cell
NO 2 – (g) + H 2 O ⎯→ NO 3 − (aq) + 2H + (aq) +2e is − 0.78 V.
Calculate the reduciton potential in 9 molar H + assuming all other species at unit concentration. What will be the reduction potential in neutral medium ?
Text Solution
Verified by ExpertsThe correct answer is:
CHECK THE SOLUTION.
0.836 volt, 1.1937 volt
Sol. E oxidation = – 0.78 –
log 9 2 = – 0.78 –
× 2 × log 9 = –0.836 volt
E reduction = –E oxidation = 0.836 volt
In neutral medium,
E Oxidation = – 0.78 –
log (10 –7 ) 2 = –1.1937 volt
