In copying a quadratic equation of the form x 2 + px + q = 0 the coefficient of x was wrongly written as –10 in place of –11 and the roots were found to be 4 and 6. Find the roots of correct equation.

CHECK THE SOLUTION.
Sol. x 2 + px + q = 0 sum of roots = – p
p ⇒ – 11 correct products of roots = q
q ⇒ 4 × 6 = 24
so, equation is
x 2 + (–11)x + 24 = 0
x 2 – 8x – 3x + 24= 0
(x – 8) (x – 3) = 0
x = 8, x = 3
