In biology, two plants are considered to belong to the same species if they can mate or cross-pollinate naturally and produce fertile offspring. This is called the biological species concept, proposed by Ernst Mayr.

Just having the same number of chromosomes or similar genes is not enough—plants with the same chromosome number may still be different species if they cannot reproduce successfully.

Looking alike or having the same chemical compounds also doesn’t guarantee they are the same species.
